ABOUT THE AUTHOR

William Hope Hodgson was a gifted English author of horror, fantasy and science fiction who produced a large body of work, consisting of essays, short fiction, and novels. Hodgson's work would later prove inspirational to many science fiction and fantasy writers. Hodgson was a cabin boy and sailor in the 1890s and used his personal experiences at sea to lend authentic detail to his short horror stories, many of which are set on the ocean, including his series of linked tales forming the Sargasso Sea Stories. His novels, such as The House on the Borderland (Alan Moore collects rare editions of Hodgson best-known work) and The Night Land, feature more cosmic themes, but several of his novels also focus on horrors associated with the sea. He was killed in action on the Western Front in 1918.
