Harwood's (b. 1893) published his book privately in New York in 1928. It is a historical survey of human attitudes and conduct toward animals primarily in Britain (except Scotland and Wales), but also in Europe generally, from the early medieval era to the turn of the 19th century. It covers religious and mythological, scientific, political, and creative dimensions. Fraser (animal welfare, U. of British Columbia) and Preece (political philosophy, Wilfrid Laurier U.) have added many additional notes explaining his references to fairly obscure historical figures and writers; translating his quotations; and generally making up for his assumption that his readers had a high level of knowledge about European literary, social, and political history. The text is double spaced. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
