Microwave Firing Journal: Same-Day Bisque and Glaze Pottery Experiments
This journal documents my ongoing exploration of microwave pottery firing, a fast and highly experimental method that makes same-day bisque and glaze firing possible. Inside are detailed, first-hand notes from firing clay projects from start to finish in a single day - capturing real-world results, adjustments, successes, failures, and lessons learned along the way.
Each entry records observations on clay bodies, glaze behavior, firing times, temperatures, and microwave kiln performance, offering practical insight into what works, what doesn’t, and why. Rather than focusing on theory or studio best practices, this journal is built from lived experience: trial-and-error experimentation, unexpected outcomes, and evolving techniques developed through repeated microwave firings.
I created this journal to answer the questions I am asked most often about microwave firing pottery. Pottery is a community, and this book is my way of sharing my process and notes openly. However, this journal ends with an important reminder: don’t try this at home. Pottery is always an adventure, and microwave firing comes with meaningful risks - risks that are clearly discussed throughout the journal.
