About The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

“All through the summer the crowd of ragged-trousered philanthropists continued to toil and sweat at their noble and unselfish task of making money for Mr Rushton.”

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a novel by Irish author and house painter Robert Tressell, a pen name for Robert Noonan, first published in 1914. Semi-autobiographical, and based on his own experiences of poverty and exploitation, it tells the story of house painter Frank Owen’s struggles to find work in the fictional town of Mugsborough.

In an attack on the innate greed and dishonesty of the capitalist system, Owen inducts his fellow work mates into the secrets of the ‘Great Money Trick’. A classic novel of working-class life, and an impassioned indictment of selfish capitalism, makes for a powerful, absorbing literary classic, and an unmissable read.
