The Alchemical Rosary is a detailed alchemical manual that presents the making of the Stone and the White and Red Elixirs as a long, disciplined sequence of purification, dissolution, decomposition, sublimation, fixation, fermentation, and projection. The text combines practical-sounding laboratory instructions with philosophical and spiritual reflection, treating alchemy as both a material and transformative art.
The work begins with the dissolution of the Stone in Mercury, which is described as the original matter containing the principles of both Gold and Silver. Mercury must first be purified by removing its impurities through salt, vinegar, sublimation, and heating. Pure Gold or Silver is then gradually incorporated into it under gentle fire until the body is reduced back to a mercurial state. This stage is treated as essential because, according to the text, no true transmutation can occur unless the materials are first returned to their Prima Materia, or first matter. Patience is emphasized constantly: haste, especially excessive heat, is said to ruin the tinctures and destroy the work.
The next stages focus on corruption, putrefaction, and purification. After dissolution, the material is buried in warm manure so that it may decompose fully, producing the blackness known as the “Head of the Raven,” a key sign that the work has begun properly. The Stone is then decomposed into the four elements — water, air, fire, and earth — by distillation and calcination. Each element is purified separately: water and air are repeatedly distilled, while earth and fire are calcined. These processes remove impurity and make the Stone more subtle, fit for reassembly in a more perfected form.
A major part of the text explains how water cleanses while oil or air tincts and colours. Water is associated with washing and spiritual mediation; oil or air with dyeing, penetration, fixation, and soul. The text carefully distinguishes the white and red paths: white substances and operations belong to Silver, while red substances and operations belong to Gold. Mixing them incorrectly is presented as a serious error.
In the third operation, the purified elements are recombined. Water is gradually restored to the earth through repeated imbibition, grinding, burial, drying, and calcination until the earth becomes white and subtle enough to be sublimed. From this process comes the White Sulphur, an incombustible substance suitable for producing Silver. By further dissolving this white substance in red water, coagulating, and subliming it again, the operator may obtain Red Sulphur, suited to Gold.
The fourth operation is fixation and fermentation. White Sulphur is fixed on Silver and Red Sulphur on Gold, because the ferment must match the body it perfects. Exact proportions of earth, water, air, and sometimes fire are repeatedly stressed. The text insists that success depends on balancing these qualities correctly, neither too moist nor too dry, neither too hot nor too cold.
Finally, the treatise describes the completed White and Red Elixirs, their multiplication through repeated dissolution and coagulation, and their projection onto Mercury or imperfect metals to produce Silver or Gold. It also claims extraordinary medicinal powers for the perfected medicine, including preserving health, restoring vitality, and curing illness. The conclusion recaps the whole art as a process of making the Stone subtle, purifying its parts, reuniting them, fixing the volatile, and perfecting the Elixir through repeated operations until it can endure fire and transform other bodies.
