A sweet and loving story for children about the Mommy & Child family structure, where a woman chooses to have a child on her own. Told by the main character - a young boy around 6 years old - the messages are age-appropriate and positive, delivered in a simple, straightforward fashion, as told from one child to another.

Without needing to get into the details of anatomy and avoiding imprecise terminology and metaphors that may confuse children, the book introduces the concept of a donor with sensitivity and appreciation.

Honoring how “every story is unique and special about how a baby came to be,” children will learn: that a woman can make a baby with the help of a (sperm) donor; how much the main character’s mommy wanted and loves him and how there are so many others who love him, too; that there are many different types of family structures and that what is important is the love they have in common; and, a simple way to respond to the question, “Do you have a daddy?”
Mommy & Me – How I Came to Be is a helpful tool to introduce the mommy & child family structure and vocabulary at an early age and encourages an open dialogue as children grow older.

About the author

Elizabeth Weiss is a mother of two young children whom she had on her own. She is an active member of the Single Mothers by Choice (SMC) organization and enjoys the exchange of camaraderie, guidance, and support of all women, whichever path they follow. She has navigated thus far in her journey as a single mom answering questions, proactively and reactively, from her communities, care providers, and workplace with candor and thoughtfulness. She hopes her approach will help other women feel supported and empowered on the options that may be available to them.

Ms. Weiss created this book in hopes of helping others start their own conversations. This book captures each word and concept she carefully selected for discussions with her children, starting from a very young age.

Ms. Weiss is also an attorney, focused on compliance and ethics.
